With the next World Cup not until June there is a large gap between World Cup races. There are still some big events before then, namely the traditional international season opener, Sea Otter, from the 19th-22nd of April. However, for many riders they tailored their training programs to accomodate for Pietermaritzburgs’ demanding pedally sections. Now that the riders can move back to a more ‘normal’ training program. downhill247com AM1 — Angus Maddern is hands down one of the most dedicated racers on the scene.

Angus Maddern has been representing Intense Cycles here in Australia and after having a chat with him it was clear that Intense picked the right man to show case their bikes. The final round of the 2011/12 Vic DH series was run and won this weekend in Maldon at Mount Tarrengower. The final round was going to decide the Elite Mens overall winner with Tim Eaton and Connor Fearon separated by only 23 points coming into the event. After qualifying this gap was even smaller, with Tim qualifying first and Connor second, whoever took the higher place in the race would win the overall. As it turned out Rhys Atkinson took the win by 0.18 of a second with Tim Eaton second, Connor Fearon ended up crashing twice in his final run and finished tenth. In the Under 19 category Dean Lucas won by over six seconds with a time that would have placed him top five in Elite, he then raced Elite and finished in third!

downhill247com Newell3 — Another small privateer team that raced the National Series this year was Nathan Newell on the Craftworks team.

More and more we are seeing smaller teams pop up around the country and contend some of the big races such as the National Series and the Vic DH series. This year ex-motocross rider Nathan Newell raced across the country in his first National Series. We caught up with Nathan to see what his take on it all was.
